49 | JOURNEY CLASS NOTES IN MEMORY CHARLES A. "BUDDY" CATLETT 75, d. Dec. 11, 2017, trustee. A longtime member of First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, Catlett graduated from C-N in 1954 on a tennis scholarship and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was instrumental in organizing youth tennis programs in Jefferson City. The Jefferson City native was an active member of the community and was owner of Shipe and Catlett Hardware. He served as a C-N Board of Trustees member from 1995 to 2000. He was also a C-N Athletic Hall of Fame inductee. In 2015, the University honored him with the naming of the Charles A. "Buddy" Catlett Tennis Complex. He is survived by his wife, Betty Rugel Catlett, two sons and several grandchildren and extended family. V. LANIEL CHAPMAN 86, d. Oct. 27, 2017, trustee. A 1957 alumnus, Chapman served in the U.S. National Guard. The Pelzer, South Carolina, native ran a private law practice from 1962-2016 and was a senior partner at Chapman & Yon, LLP in Anderson, South Carolina. He was admitted to the United States District Court, District of South Carolina; Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals; and United States Supreme Court. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Belton. He served as a C-N Board of Trustees member from 2005 to 2011 and received the University's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Vivian Chapman, their two daughters and several extended family members. GEORGE CLAY, SR. 81, d. July 2, 2017, technical assistant for Academic Computer Sciences. A native of Lynchburg, Virgina, Clay resided most of his adult life in Jefferson City, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He served the U.S. Government as an accountant for over 32 years. He joined C-N in 1992 and served until 1999. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Sheets Clay, several children, grandchildren and extended family. DR. LOUISE DICKENSON 95, d. August 28, 2018, associate professor of French. A native of Algiers, Algeria, Dickenson came to the U.S. in 1947 and graduated from C-N in 1959. She joined C-N's faculty that same year, retiring in 1989 as professor emerita. She was recognized by the One-Hundredth General Assembly of the State of Tennessee for her teaching legacy. An active community member, she served as a volunteer on the Board of the Jefferson City Public Library and the Community College Council. She is survived by her three sons, Craig, Brent and Carroll, as well as several extended family members DR. DEBORAH HAYES 66, d. March 16, 2018, associate professor of Education. A resident of Morristown, Hayes joined C-N's faculty in 2013. She is survived by her husband, Michael, a daughter, two grandsons and extended family. JACK SHANNON 71, d. July, 17, 2017, administrator. A native of Lebanon, Shannon joined the staff at Carson-Newman in 1975. During his C-N tenure he served as an administrator in the areas of Admissions, Advancement and Student Services. He was an active member of Manley Baptist Church in Morristown until his C-N retirement in 2007. He then served in his church of Carmel Baptist Church in Matthews, North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Rosanne Jones Shannon, one son, several grandchildren and extended family SHARON LEDFORD ANTHONY 76, d. Nov. 27, 2018, administrative assistant for the Registrar's Office. A resident of Lenoir City, Anthony was a 1988 C-N graduate. She worked in the Registrar's Office from 1977 to 2001. Anthony was a member of First Baptist Church Lenoir City. She is survived by a daughter and extended family. JOEY SEAVER 54, d. Dec. 3, 2018, assistant baseball coach. A Church Hill native, he was a member of the first Junior College World Series team at Walters State Community College in 1984, starred at the University of Tennessee and played two seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers minor league system. While an assistant coach at C-N, he helped the Eagles win three South Atlantic Conference titles and a trip to the NAIA World Series in 1993 and NCAA Division II World Series in 1999. He went on to serve as pitching coach for WSCC and pitching coach in the pro ranks. He is survived by his wife, Diana, and three children.
