GETTING AROUND PACKAGE TOURS How to get around? Where to stay? What to do? Don't worry about the details. Tour operators and travel agents design tours that feature the state's highlights and everything on your bucket list. Package trips are available at all price ranges, from rugged to luxurious and everything in between. In a state this size getting around is half the fun. Most itineraries include more than one way of traveling. CRUISES Set sail for Alaska! Our state is a cruiser's paradise, with a range of ships and trips to take you on your dream vacation. You can choose from a small to large ship, a round-trip or one-way itinerary, an Inside Passage or Gulf of Alaska route. Customize your journey with shore excursions at ports of call along the way. You can even build on your vacation with a land-based tour before or after your cruise. DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) Alaska is big, but it's not intimidating. Create your own dream itinerary with help from TravelAlaska.com. On our site, you'll find details and deals, itineraries and ideas, tips and tricks to get the most out of your Alaska vacation. From moose to mountains, Alaska is waiting, for you. BY ROAD Alaska has 31,000 miles of road. And no matter which road you take, it's sure to be a beautiful trip. Rent a car, RV, or even a motorcycle when you arrive, and experience the state at your leisure. To preview some great road trips in Alaska, check out the road trips on page 25. BY RAIL Enjoy the view without driving yourself. Alaska has two legendary railways: 67.5-mile White Pass & Yukon Route, which leads from Skagway to the historic Yukon gold fields; and the Alaska Railroad, whose iconic cars travel 470 miles of rail from Seward to Fairbanks and points in between. Rail is a great way to see the state, as part of a package or day trip. BY WATER Cruises are the most popular way to see Alaska on the water, but it's not the only option. Travel between Alaska communities by ferry or water taxi. Rent kayaks to explore our waterways or take a day cruise to see calving glaciers. Seeing Alaska by water is an unforgettable experience. TYPES OF TRIPS BY AIR Experience the diversity Alaska has to offer by air. Only 18 percent of our communities are accessible by the road system. It's no wonder Alaska has more pilots per capita than any other state — airplanes are our public transit. Regular air service connects large towns and smaller communities, saving you time, so you can see more.
