Breweries in the Treasure State are much like the weather… wait a month and a new one will pop up. But I must give owners credit for their entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to give it a try. I'm sure the tiny towns and small cities across Montana appreciate the welcomed alternative to everyday economics too. Anyone familiar with me, knows I spend a lot of time behind the windshield checking out Montana's burgeoning micro-brewery movement and when I hear about a new one opening, you can bet your bottle top I'll be there! Meet You in Lewistown A Watering Hole Well Worth the Drive! I recently stumbled across a local watering hole located in a historic mercantile building in downtown Lewistown. When I walked in, I knew instantly it wasn't your typical brew pub. Big Spring Brewing is truly a diamond in the ruff for the locals and travelers alike but toss in a grill, steakhouse, and a wine bar and you have a whole lot of mouth-watering goodness under one roof! During my visit, I sampled an assortment of their beers on tap. First up, Big Spring's Big Sky Golden… a definite home run, I might add! Checking in 5.2% ABV, this is a very drinkable ale with no after taste. It pours a clear medium gold color with a small white head that dissipates quickly, leaving some nice lacing. It's clean, very refreshing and goes great while watching the game on one of Big Spring's many TV screens. The Grapefruit IPA checks in at 6.6% ABV and offers the perfect balance of grapefruit flavor and bitterness from the hops. I am happy to report that this tasty IPA has a bright future in-store. According to Brewmaster, Aaron Sullivan, it may become a summer seasonal once he gets more beer up and brewing. The Scotch Ale is a harmonious surprise of caramel in the nose and a solid malt profile that backs it up on flavor. At 6.6% ABV, this beer is easy to drink and has a pleasantly rounded profile that goes well with its clear, deep amber color. A refreshing, medium to full-bodied ale, Big Spring's Rye Pale Ale is nicely balanced with Willamette hops, two-row barley, oats and rye. The malts impart a sweet flavor and a crisp, yet light aroma of caramel and honey. This not-too-strong 5.1% ABV tops off with a khaki head and carbonation that presents itself in a lively way and does not fail in bringing you back for another sip! Crystal Pale ale is a tasty brew with the perfect amount of hops and is nicely balanced by a caramel malt sweetness. At 4.5% ABV, this medium-bodied ale with its refreshing fruit and citrus notes, pairs nicely with seafood, classic fish 'n chips or a sizzling steak right off the grill. So, while you are there, be sure to sit a spell, enjoy the lively atmosphere and check out their menu, you will not be disappointed. Oh, and don't forget to take a growler home. Happy New Year!
