Chronic and allergic rhinitis influence hospital readmissions CINCINNATI, OHIO— Accord- ing to Medical Xpress, researchers from the University of Cincinnati studied medical outcomes and hos- pital readmissions for 4,754 asthma patients and 2,176 COPD patients in a five-year period. e researchers determined that asthmatics with allergic rhinitis were 4.4 times more likely to be readmitted within 30 days compared to asthmatics with- out allergic rhinitis. Asthmatics with non-allergic rhinitis were 3.7 times more likely to be readmitted than those without non-allergic rhinitis. For COPD patients, rates were 2.4 times and 2.6 times, respectively. Coauthor Jonathan Bernstein, MD believes the findings could encour- age physicians to consider upper respiratory disease when treating asthma and COPD patients. Find- ings were published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
