Steinbeck makes in his novel The Grapes
of Wrath, perhaps none capture the ineffa-
bility of the h u m a n s p i r i t m o r e t h a n t h i s
o n e : " M a n , u n like any other thing organic
or inorganic in the universe, grows beyond
his work, walks up the stairs of his con-
cepts, and emerges ahead of his accom-
plishments." Why invest the better part of
our years in something, then, if the fruits of
those labors aren't used for a greater pur-
poseāif our sweat and toil bring ear thly
rewards only. Just ask the H r o nis broth-
ers, Kosta and Pete.
