MARCH 2019 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 37 Fresh Start Tired of their existing kitchen, newlyweds asked Madeleine Sloback to modernize the space to make it bright, airy, and versatile for entertaining. Sloback demolished the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create an open- concept plan and integrated the partial wall into the island for privacy and separation from the bedrooms. A combination of white and wood cabinets offers a fresh look, while a paneled fridge and an integrated banquette with a storage bench keep the space streamlined. Design choices, such as the textured ceramic back-splash, black hardware and faucet, and a reveal detail between the countertop and cabinets, provide a customized touch. —N.F.M. Urban Delight For the kitchen in this Toronto condo, Martin de Sousa expanded the layout for additional storage and counter space and made it more open and accessible to the rest of the living spaces. The designer added casual seating at the entrance and utilized a nook for open storage. Because the unit's concrete construction limited the kitchen's size and configuration, de Sousa changed the orientation from a galley style to an L-shape, for a more effective layout. He also installed a drop ceiling for slim LED pot lights and added task lighting and an adjustable wall sconce for more illumination. Other design highlights include a stone planter for fresh herbs and flowers, graphic ceramic tile, and black hardware. —N.F.M.
