There is a track announcer, placing judg-
es, trophies, and nervous owners. Even
though there are no purses, the stretch run
in Aiken is a thrill, with owners yelling and
pounding on the rail as if they were about
to win the Derby.
Many of the Hall of Fame trainers who
called Aiken home – Mack Miller, John
Gaver, Woody Stephens, Jim Maloney,
Scotty Schulhofer, Elliott Burch, Henry
Clark, and Buddy Hirsch – used the Tri-
als as a unique teaching experience. The
same happens today.
