''Briana taught us to be selfish … in a good way," she said. "I take care of everything and
everybody else. Briana was the first person to tell me that I have to stop and take care of
myself. I soaked it all in like a sponge … I took every word in that class to heart," she says.
Briana teaches financial education classes at the Rescue Mission and First Stop, a non-profit
center that assists the homeless.
Now, as she nears graduation from the program, Cheri has saved enough money to open a
secured credit card, in addition to a savings and checking account. She's stopped smoking and
is saving that money, and she has written down her short- and long-term financial plans.
''Briana gave me that little bit of hope that I needed to get a foothold on the mountain of life,''
she said.
"It's still scary, but I have a whole new look on life.''

After leaving an abusive relationship, Cheri Moore had
to start over. She had previously worked as a waitress but
handed over all her money to her ex. Cheri never had a
savings or checking account. When she walked away, she left
with nothing.
Fast forward to nearly a year ago when she entered the
Huntsville Downtown Rescue Mission women's program,
where she learned many things. But it wasn't until she
attended a class taught by Redstone's Financial Education
Coordinator, Briana Cousins, that it all clicked for her.
