Since then he has installed nine additional metal sculptures along the trail including a 2-foot sphere, a set of 8-foot towers with lights, and a 9-foot pelican that is dedicated to Doug Wicks, a founder of the River's Edge Trail. Another main event of the show is the awarding of the Val Knight Scholarship. "Val Knight was pretty much a self-taught artist," says Mazur. "She was passionate about her art and sharing it with the youth of the community." When Knight passed in 1990, she gave an initial amount specifically to senior high school students hoping to encourage them in pursuing art after high school. Since that time, a portion of AAM member's dues continue to fund the scholarship. AAM highlights three schools: Great Falls High, CM Russell, and the Paris Gibson Educational Center. Teachers choose students to present their work who are considering a career or college degree in the arts. Then two members from AAM choose one student-artist from each school. The three finalists are invited to attend the opening reception on Thursday night when the winners are announced. Funding of the Val Knight Scholarship comes from the annual raffle held during the art show. Every artist donates an original painting or piece of artwork. Then Mazur explains, "We sell 150 tickets at $5 each to give the public an opportunity to own something new and original. The raffle money funds the following year's scholarship." New this year are the People's Choice awards, giving the public the chance to recognize their favorite artists. Best of Show, First, Second and Third will be awarded during the reception. This year's artists are Monica Bauer, Janet Christina, Judy Ericksen, Jean Fleming-Mazur, Chary Majerus, Joy Staelens and Sandy Walker. They represent a wonderful mix of unique and traditional art including watercolor, oil, acrylic painting, calligraphy, abstract art, ceramics, fabric and mixed media. The show opens on Thursday, March 21 at 1pm with the reception 4-8pm. Sally Jo & Friends, a local group, will entertain with their mix of traditional blue grass, folk and other fun music.
