work in this show is transparent," he says. "Transparent is way harder to
work with than oil paint. Oil paint you can paint over; it's more forgiving.
Transparent is most difficult to master."
Karen Leigh of Kalispell joins this year's show as a special distinguished
member guest. Some of her landscapes and urban scenes have an almost
photographic quality, created with sharp lines and vivid color, while her
portraits more closely resemble French impressionism. Her work is included in
the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the White House.
"Watercolor, for many years (centuries, really) was seen as merely a
medium in which to work out ideas before being executed in oil. Thankfully,
times have changed and now paintings in water media have finally been
recognized as important works on their own," Leigh says. "As a Great Falls
native, I am very honored to be a part of this group!"
Joe Bohler, of Monument, Colorado, also is exhibiting as a special guest.
A Great Falls native, Bohler has a long history with the original C.M. Russell
Auction. "He was a prominent artist at the Russell in the very early days, back
in the '80s," according to Paulick. "We're hoping to draw some people who
want to see Joe's work."
This year's show is in a new location. It takes place within the Out West Art
Show and Sale at the Heritage Inn. You will find the artists in room 200, just
above the lobby.
Paulick looks forward to the location change and being part of the Out
West Show. "It's like a family gathering. People at this show visit with each
other and enjoy themselves. It's a neat organization to be associated with."
