portfolio • 11 the russell: the sale to benefit the cm russell museum authentically capture the excitement, romance, and adventure of the West inspired artists throughout the 20th century and continues to inspire artists today," says Museum director of art and philanthropy, Duane Braaten. "His ability to tell a story paired with his technical mastery across a variety of media is certain to keep Charlie Russell relevant for generations to come," adds Braaten. During the three-day extravaganza, collectors are encouraged to visit with the Russell Skull Society Artists in their individual suites at the Mansfield Convention Center at 10 a.m. each morning. Each member displays up to 30 new works. The C.M. Russell Museum founded the Russell Skull Society of Artists in 2013 to recognize living American Western artists whose work celebrates the themes and tradition of Charles M. Russell (1864–1926) and his contemporaries in their portrayal of the Old West. Currently, the group comprises 23 distinguished members recognized for their artistic achievement, ongoing commitment to the mission of the Russell Museum, and history of participation in The Russell, the museum's major fundraising event. The members of the society hail from varying backgrounds, geographical locations, and avenues by which they arrived at their Western subjects. Some are formally trained; some are self- taught. They work in a variety of styles that, on one end of the spectrum, uphold traditional realism, and on the other end, explore new aesthetic realms in the provocative reinterpretation of traditional themes. The Russell proves worthy of the vigorous applause received from artists, collectors, and patrons from around the globe as it immerses art connoisseurs in the true spirit of the West. Spanning three days, the event culminates on Saturday evening in a major auction of works by contemporary western artists and historic masters, including Western Art Week's infamous honoree, Charles Marion Russell. The Russell kicks off with the Art Preview Party Thursday night, which is a great time for artists and collectors to network and renew old friendships - or start new ones. The event is held in the museum … surrounded by fabulous works slated for auction over the next two evenings. Friday morning, Art in Action at the Country Club brings alive the process of creating art when 26 artists put the finishing touches on in-progress works before they go up for bid in the crowd pleasing First Strike live auction later that evening. This event hosts a more laid-back atmosphere then Saturday night's auction with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the museum. Great music by Trinity Seely wraps up the auction and finishes off the evening. The live auction on Saturday night is a must-attend event for western art connoisseurs. The sale, which kicks off at 5 p.m. at the convention center, features nearly 200 paintings and sculptures by acclaimed living artists and significant historic artists. In addition to the Russell Skull Society members, many other contemporary artists contribute their latest pieces, including Harry Koyoma, Richard Lauritzen and Bruce Morgan, to name a few. In the historic category, works in several mediums by C.M. Russell are up for bid, including an 1897 oil painting entitled "Approach of White Men" which is expected to fetch up to $1,750,000. The Russell Exhibition and Sale is more than a western art auction – it's a three-day western art experience. From the elegant décor to the gourmet meal Saturday night, to the excitement of the hammer strike on record-breaking prices, it's truly a unique event and one everyone must experience.
