Page 5 Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce The Washington County Council of Cooperatives Agriculture of the Year was awarded to brothers Rodney and Stephen Carr. The Carr bothers grew up in Randolph County. Eventually their lives brought them to Marietta where they started a family business making concrete products that included a concrete livestock waterer and built it toward success by showing their products at fairs and communicating and hearing the needs of local farmers. Stephen has served as a member and chairman of the Marietta Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. He also served on the Wilbert Manufacturers Association board of directors. He is a member of the Lowell American Legion Post, the Masons, and First Presbyterian Church where he has been ordained as a deacon and an elder. His hobbies include his farm; his garden, the use of which he sometimes donates to local charity auctions; hunting, fishing and entertaining the residents of the O'Neill Center and local nursing homes with his ragtime piano playing. While in college, Rodney Carr married his high-school sweetheart, Charolette, and after graduation took a job managing the 1400-acre farm at Bishop Hodges Catholic Pastoral Center in Huttonsville, West Virginia. He has two children, Shawn and wife Valerie of Painesville, Ohio, and Shelly and husband, Steve, of Marietta. He is also the grandfather of four granddaughters and one grandson. Now retired, Rodney lives on a small farm in Washington County where he raises beef cattle. He is a member of the Washington County Farm Bureau and a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he sits on the Board of Trustees. His hobbies include farming, hunting, fishing, playing guitar and helping his neighbors. Stephen and Rodney have been long supporters of 4-H throughout the years by buying their livestock at the Washington County and Waterford fairs. They also continued to support the West Virginia University Department of Agriculture by participating in the Three Little Pigs Banquet, which raised funds for scholarships. The Washington County Council of Cooperatives comprises Washington Electric Cooperative, Farmer's Mutual Insurance Association, Farm Credit Mid -America, Heritage Co-Op and the Washington County Farm Bureau. Since 1971, the council has presented the agricultural award to long-term farmers or agribusiness people in Washington County who have shown outstanding leadership and commitment to operating their businesses, shown a superb willingness to help improve the agriculture of the community, and have been successful in their careers. Zonta member, Desni Crock, presented the 44th Elizabeth "Betty" L. Hadler Zonta Woman of the Year to Cathy Harper. Crock stated multiple letters were sub- mitted nominating Har- per but one person described her as "a kindred spirit who straps her Superwoman cape on every day and tries to make our little corner of the world a better place." Harper began her volunteerism when her 5 children were young. She was a Boy Scout leader, a Girl Scout leader, a basketball coach, a baseball coach, a soccer coach and even The Marietta Bantam League Director for 10 years. One person said, "her greatest strength was identifying young people who are marginalized, helping them find their passion, and then providing opportunities for them to shine." Harper found a need for lower income-based housing, she assisted in what is now Marietta Mills Apartments. Harper was a part of the Boys and Girls Club, one of the founders of The Right Path for Washington County, and is a part of the Opioid Hub Steering Committee. The Betty L. Hadler, Zonta Woman of the Year is presented to a woman in Washington County who exemplifies service to her community. 104th Annual Meeting Highlights
