"With art, I've always loved it, and it was my favorite subject at school – I just didn't seem to get on with math or chemistry, for some reason. And with horses already a huge part of my life, I was always going to draw and paint them. They are just so fasci- nating, the way they move, and such a great subject to focus on. "I think I have a similar fascination as people that race, breed, or own horses; it's just that I've chosen to express it in a differ- ent way. When you speak to someone who shares that interest, you know instantly, and they have this kind of passion for the animal. I think that's what I try to capture in my work." Family tradition, particularly the influence of his father, had also made Paske want to serve in the army following university ["I was lucky enough to get a scholarship from the army, so the deal is that you join up after you've finished your education," he says. "You're expected to do three years, but I stayed for seven"]. But no matter where the army took him, racehorses and art were never far from his mind. "What people seem to like most about my work is the color and composition," he says of his current paint- ings. "Oils give the most vivid colors, and I often use board rather than canvas, because board is more durable, and you can kind of scrape and rework it.
