"There are four of us outriders working the races and for training in the mornings," said head outrider Scott Cole. "That's one or two more than some other tracks, but this is the elite. This is as good as it gets. "Our horses are an extension of us. Without them, there is no way we could do what we do. They could sell you out in a heartbeat but don't. You basically put your life in their hands. Good ponies will know what is happening before you ever do. They have a sixth sense about them." Although Cole will tell you that all of the outriders are equal, he is the point person for Keeneland's quartet. Most recently, he has been seen riding either Slinger or Stormy. While Slinger is edging near the end of his time as an outrider pony, Stormy is truly just getting started. Their looks and personalities, as it happens, are just as opposite as where they are in their careers. Slinger is the pretty boy. A stunning palomino, he started out as a family pet and has been with Cole since he was two months old. He is also the crowd favorite. "Ever since I have been here and I have ridden him, I have had people come to me in the tunnel during the races and tell me they just came to see him be- cause he's so friendly," said Cole. "He's a prima don- na. He knows he is pretty because he hears it every day. He knows when a camera is on him. If you have your back turned to him, he will nudge you because he wants you to scratch him." Stormy, meanwhile, is a more rugged-looking gray chap. He eventually is meant to be Slinger's replacement.
