Carmel Valley Group is Dedicated to Saving Open Space B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D I n the mid-20th century, the 30-acre parcel adjacent to Carmel Valley Village was the site of a dream. Developer Byington Ford envi- sioned a suburban neighborhood with an air- field as its centerpiece. That plan didn't pan out, but the airfield operated until 2002. Wildfires have recently threatened the area—2008's Basin Complex and 2016's Soberanes Fires—and the former airfield was pressed into service as a vital firefighting staging area. Now, the property's owners have decided to sell it as residential building lots. A group of concerned Carmel Valley residents have banded together to purchase the former airfield, pre- serving it as open space and ensuring that it will be available for use in future emergencies. Carmel Valley Save Open Space is dedicat- ed to securing funding to purchase the land. The effor t has the suppor t of Congressman Jimmy Panetta. "I have fond memories of growing up here," he says. My wife and I want our daughters to have the same unique Carmel Valley experiences. I hope the open space of the former airfield con- tinues to be a part of their playground, while con- tinuing to be used by emergency services to help our first responders in times of need."
