F or over a quarter century, a small group of art lovers has volunteered their time and efforts to put together the Carmel Art Festival in downtown Carmel, an event where artists must be invited to par- ticipate in the plein air (painting outside in natu- ral light) competition. Longtime event organizer Hella Rothwell has shifted this year's event to take place entirely in Carmel's Devendorf Park, with the intention of keeping everything in one location and not has- sling with closing off an adjacent street. "This year is a major change," she says. "We will have it all in the park, with a VIP event Friday night for past buyers that is invite only. Restauranteur Rich Pepe is donating small bites and Albatross Ridge is donating wine and we will have etched wine glasses." Artists come from all over the world to paint outdoor scenes in Monterey County over two days, ensuring that the work is done so quickly that the paint is still wet when they are displayed in the park for judging and a silent auction on Friday afternoon. On Saturday, the artwork Absentee bidding is offered for those who can't attend the event, which features plein air art from Monterey County created during the festival. This year, the Carmel Art Festival will be held entirely in Devendorf Park, but many local galleries will be holding their own receptions and art shows. Just 60 artists are chosen to participate each year. 168 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 9 Photos: DMT Imaging
