A my B. Scher's "This Is How I Save My Life" takes readers through a powerful journey of self-healing on an emotional, mental, physical and spiritual level. Scher, sister of Monterey County Youth Museum Executive Director Lauren Cohen, nearly died from Lyme disease before traveling to India with her parents for an experimental stem cell treatment. Her transparency throughout the process and her own struggles with releasing a sickness mindset make the elegantly written memoir relatable. "As I wrote, I realized that readers are smart and they know when you're not sharing exactly what you're feeling. I had a rule at all times I should be five times more uncomfortable and five times more truthful than I wanted to be," Scher says. Scher, currently a New Yorker, struggled with guilt at the financial and physical burden she felt she placed on her family, along with feeling like others were worse off than she was. She ulti- mately took trauma training and now helps those suffering with anxiety and other painful emotions. "My grandfather and uncle survived the Holocaust," she says. "Why were they not as screwed up as I am? Pitting yourself against another doesn't help…It's about understanding trauma in a different, more empathetic and compassionate way." May is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Scher is also the author of "How to Heal Yourself When No One Else Can" and "How to Heal Yourself from Anxiety When No One Else Can."
