Seaside's Counterpoint Coffee is On Point B Y B R E T T W I L B U R A t Counterpoint Coffee, Max Georis' café/recording studio in Seaside, vinyl blasts rock against a raw space filled with paint- ings by his father and other artists, vintage bicy- cles, a skull, a large Buddha, chess set, books, can- dles and excellent coffee. Georis, who grew up in Carmel with brother Klaus, a celebrated chef, learned from his restau- ranteur parents Sylvia and Walter to appreciate both hard work and finding his passion. "I have zero sense of moderation," he says. "I became obsessed with music, coffee and photography." Apprenticing at his parents' Casanova restau- rant, taking guitar lessons, and studying with cel- ebrated composer Alan Silvestri convinced him to find a career that blended all his interests. Counterpoint Coffee opened almost a year ago after Georis moved back from LA, where he had a career as a music engineer, producer and performer. "I wanted to approach a project I loved and enjoyed while not feeling like a job," he says. His state-of-the-art recording studio is locat- ed in his coffee shop, where an internationally ranked barista carefully pours elegant drinks while Georis composes his own pieces. Georis also works with musicians wanting help refining their skills. "I'm interested in developing young talent," he says. "I'm most interested in people who have a goal."
