A s a young man armed with a BA in music, Trust found himself knocking around Manhattan with dreams of making a living playing the trumpet. Economic realities forced him to take on a day job, and he accepted a position as librarian in the music depar tment of the New York City Public Library. Little did he know that this job taken out of necessity was the springboard to a lifelong career. Trust later answered a classif ied ad in the New York Times that couldn't have been more perfectly suited for him: "Wanted: music clerk, must have knowledge of popular and classical music. Prior library experience preferred." The notice was placed by Broadcast Music International. More familiarly known as BMI, the non- profit organization was founded in 1939 and collects licensing fees for songwrit- ers and composers. Trust went to work in the "logging" department, which he describes as "song identification and crediting."
