ALLEGRO REINVENTED AS A BIRRERIA For the last three years, the wrath of Mother Nature and some ill-timed road con- struction gave Allegro Pizzeria owner Jeano Abraham the summertime blues. "We've all been hit hard," says Abraham of businesses at the mouth of Carmel Valley. "Rain, floods, fire, mudslides, road closures, you name it." With Highway 1 routinely closed to the south, and Rio Road blocked during last sum- mer's road work, it finally gave Abraham time to reassess his famed Italian joint at The Barnyard. He renovated the space, making it more casu- al, even turning his old wine bar into a second kitchen. Partnering with next-door neighbor Carmel Craft Brewing Co., Abraham branded Allegro a "birreria," pouring the local brew and serving pub-style food to hungry beer drinkers through a shared window. "We're more than pizza and pasta now," says Abraham, who looks forward (finally) to a busy summer. His new birreria menu includes barbecued ribs, Cajun sausage, Santa Maria-style tri-tip, slid- ers, fajitas and Thai thighs with peanut sauce. "I wanted interesting food the kids would like," he says. "You just can't be stagnant in this business." Allegro Gourmet Pizzeria is located at 3770 The Barnyard, Carmel.
