Weren't there awe-inspiring landscapes and amazing recre- ational opportunities found in places like Yosemite or Lake Tahoe? What are you doing living here? For me the answer is simple: Nowhere else can you have access to the largest stretch of protected state lands in the continental United States while living in a community that is as welcoming and vibrant as Saranac Lake. I kept coming back to the area—fi rst as a visitor then as a seasonal employee—because of the people with whom I would connect while staying and working here. There was never another place I lived that combined my love of the outdoors with a tremendous sense of community as Saranac Lake. This community is a place that's authentically Adirondack and Decidedly Diff erent. At fi rst glance, it's a historic village where the lakes and mountains are as accessible as the fresh air. Look a little deeper, however, and you fi nd a thriving artist community, a downtown with a buzzing nightlife, and shops and cafes allowing you to explore at your own pace. Folks come to Saranac Lake for recreation but stay and continue to come back because of our rooted sense of self and quirky originality. On behalf of the members of the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, I welcome you to the Saranac Lake Area. We hope your stay is relaxing and enjoyable, with just the right amount of excitement and adventure.
