Utilizing houseplans.com as a starting point for their concept, a Helena construction and design team helped the couple design a home incorporating their favorite elements of modern design: extensive use of glass providing for copious amounts of natural light, an open layout, and an outdoor living space. ese characteristics proved practical as well. e large windows leave lile space for artwork, but Martin says, "e natural views we have of the Sleeping Giant, the lake, and Mount Helena…that's our art." e dining area has windows on three sides allowing for ample light. Although it is adorned with a minimal neon light fixture, "We never use it!" says Beth. e open layout works well for their young son, Kash. He is always within eyesight and even uses the outdoor living space as an additional play area. "With the windows, as he gets older, we can be mindful of him," says Martin. e slightly sloped metal roof is not only a design element, but also serves for fire mitigation purposes. Building on a slope provided additional unique opportunities: much of the rock produced when the foundation was dug has been repurposed as retaining wall and accent boulders in the landscaping. Martin's workshop, where this weekend warrior loves to spend his spare time, is positioned behind the garage and partially recessed into Mount Helena. But it is the industrial accents that truly distinguish this house. The Essentials The dining furniture and buffet are constructed out of refurbished Himalayan wood. The right exit is a space saving 3-tiered collapsible door. Barstools accentuate the steel surround fireplace. Teardrop pendant lights provide a "fire & ice" illustration opposite the fireplace.
