15 Living in the interface of research and outreach Lewis had an opportunity to spend time with ABC's Board of Directors during her time at the World Food Center. Little did she know that soon after their visit a position would become available at the Almond Board and Waycott would be giving her a call. The more she learned, the more she liked. "I've worked in agriculture for a long time and with quite a few grower organizations," Lewis said. "As I spoke with ABC staff and growers, I was impressed by the industry's practical view of its challenges and opportunities. They were pragmatic and optimistic. That way of thinking is aligned with how I think." As director of Agricultural Affairs, Lewis will focus on ABC's research strategy, funding, and development and supporting solutions that address the almond industry's highest-priority issues. Research is an important area of focus for the Almond Board as it fuels key initiatives like the Almond Orchard 2025 Goals, which set industrywide targets in the areas of water efficiency, zero waste, environmentally friendly pest management and harvest dust reduction. In her role, Lewis will ensure that ABC funds and analyzes research that supports these and other industry goals, as well as the development of actionable resources. "I am fascinated by almond production and excited to be part of the dynamic group at ABC. My career has centered on the interface of research and action — interpreting research findings to create solutions that people can use," Lewis said. "Building on the strong legacy of Bob Curtis (former director of Agricultural Affairs), I look forward to advancing almond research that ultimately puts knowledge, tools and practices in the hands of growers, processors, policymakers and other important audiences." Lewis tried her hand at pruning peach trees as part of a recent meeting with university experts who are researching almonds and other crops. Lewis participated in a panel at Expo Milano in 2015, where she spoke about the future of technology in the ag sector. Lewis is a former associate director of the World Food Center at UC Davis. "Josette has an amazing and diverse resume and will add many new and valuable dimensions to our organization." – Richard Waycott
