21 What is the weirdest animal fact you've come across? "The Helmeted Honeyeater's tongue is made up of fine bristles like a paint brush. This style of tongue helps this bird to take up nectar from flowers and sap from trees." HELMETED HONEYEATER KEEPER MEAGAN What is your favourite animal fact you've come across working with animals? "I love that lemurs do 'stink fighting'. This is where they rub scent from their scent glands on their tails, then angle their tails over their heads like a scorpion curls its tail over its head, and aims it at other lemurs to show dominance." PRIMATE KEEPER JESS We know our staff have some weird and wacky stories from working at the Zoo so we thought we'd share some of their weird, funny and amazing animals stories with you. Enjoy! VOX POP Lakota turns three on June 9 and to celebrate his birthday, we have asked the keepers to help come up with five things that you may not know about Lakota and his species. FIVE FAST FACTS Lakota is named after a North American Siouan language spoken by the Lakota people of the Sioux tribes. He's quirky, cheeky, playful and developing into a lovely young man! His favourite food is browse, which the Bison get as an occasional treat. His thick winter coat and long hair become extra woolly and shaggy in autumn so by the time winter comes he is protected from the cold weather. Found in parts of Canada and the United States, the America Bison are the largest living land animals in North America. 1 2 3 5 4
