4 Fiona lays two eggs in a nest near the other Fiordland Penguin families. They try to find places together that are rocky and hard to get to to keep other animals away. Penguins are birds but a long time ago their wings evolved into flippers for swimming instead of flying, so now they can't fly away from danger. Rocks provide safety. PENGUIN PARENTING Finn and Fiona the Fiordland Penguins decide it's time to make a family and lay some eggs. It's a cold winter on New Zealand's South Island, which might seem like a crazy time to be hatching a new penguin, but that's the way they do it around these parts.
