6 I ICT TODAY The article, Smarter School Security: What We Need is a Plan, published in the May 2013 issue of BICSI News, was written during a truly tumultuous time for security and safety following several school shootings and the bombings in Boston. As a response to these tragedies, detection technologies based on acoustic signatures, energy signatures and object recognition emerged. BICSI, the Security Industry Association (SIA) and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) share a common goal to move to more efficient systems to reduce an end user's risk and to protect soft targets. "BICSI ICT member Registered Communications Distribution Designers (RCDDs) are already partnering with SIA member Security Solution Providers as they can collaborate from the board room. Design and project management is more accurate, faster to complete and best yet—encourages advocacy and acceptance," says Don Ericson, CEO of the Security Industry Association. By understanding the many security advancements since 2013, ICT professionals can learn about the latest technology trends and newly established profitable technology paths within the context of sensor diversity, object recognition-driven artificial intelligence, and how ICT is championing smart city development. Knowledge of these trends and technology paths provides new opportunities for the ICT industry and the professionals who serve it. SECURITY GETS A BOOST FROM ICT, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI), AND SMART CITIES
