S everal companies have invested in 2000-L sin- gle-use bioreactors to expand production capa- bilities, including Thermo Fisher Scientific, GE Healthcare, Pall Biotech, and Sartorius Stedim Biotech (SSB). HYPERFORMA Thermo Fisher's HyPerforma Single-Use Bioreactor (S.U.B.) system is offered in a range of 1-L to 25-L scale glass and single-use. The floor-standing bioreactor comes in a 50-L to 2000-L range with a 5:1 turn-down ratio (TDR). Minimum working volume is 400 L and maximum work- ing volume is 2000 L. The 2000-L system has a footprint of 70.5 x 67.5 140 in. and is designed for mammalian cell culture. In addition, the company offers a different, spe- cifically designed HyPerforma Single-Use Fermentor for microbial applications. "Key distinguishing features of the 2000-L S.U.B. include a top-down, angled drive mechanism based on stainless- steel mixing principals, a drilled hole sparge suited to opti- mize kLa performance, and a unique cross-flow sparge that allows for proper overlay gas delivery and mixing when using the 5:1 TDR," says Kevin Mullen, senior product manager of single-use systems, Thermo Fisher Scientific. The system comes with an adjustable motor that allows both 5:1 and 2:1 mixing. Standard features include a pneu- matic motor lift for easier bioprocessing container (BPC) loading through a vertical access door and an angled floor to ensure optimal draining of BPCs. The BPC has a bot- tom drain mechanism that ensures it drains completely. Stillfx - Stock.Adobe.com AMBER LOWRY
