These two prerequisites are EMT (EMT/FSC104) and Hazardous Materials (FSC105). Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will be eligible to sit for the EMT and Haz-Mat certification examinations. The course meets current USDOT national standard education guidelines for Emergency Medical Technician. Course teaches techniques of emergency medical care in accordance with national and state curriculum. Study of the human body, patient assessment, treatment of medically or traumatically compromised patients, special hazards, medical operations, IV monitoring, patient-assisted medication administration, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and blood-glucose monitoring. The course meets the current Hazardous Materials First Responder certification requirements for the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence. The course will cover basic methods of recognition and identification based upon the chemical and physical properties of hazardous materials, basic safety procedures when utilizing specific types of protective clothing and equipment, and basic tactical information relating to scene management. Confined space operations are taught in accordance with the National Fire Protection Agency. Program Notes: Program is not financial aid eligible. Students must successfully complete 10 simulated clinical scenarios, the final cognitive exam and the NREMT Psychomotor Skills exam in order to complete the program. This program has a strong physical agility component. Students enrolling to this program will be required to have a physical examination and medical clearance prior to enrollment. Students are required to have gym clothing each day as part of the uniform requirement. Students who become eligible to take the Hazardous Materials examination will be able to take the examination during this course. The expense of the examination is the student's responsibility.
