e final painting secured for the exhibition, Black Tail-Buffalo Days,
was listed as unlocated until just days before the exhibition opened.
Curator Emily Wilson had an image of the painting from the archives
but her research regarding its current location was unsuccessful – not
even the Charles M Russell Center at the University of Oklahoma which
oversees the raisonne (a clearinghouse of all known Russell works) knew
its location. e June issue of Western Art Collector magazine featured
a story on the upcoming exhibition that mentioned the search for the
missing painting – shortly aer the issue came out, Wilson got a call
from a collector and gallery owner in Sheridan, Wyoming, saying he saw
the story, had the painting, and would be happy to loan it.
