SiG MT 73 F I S H O N She met her husband, former boss Mike McCune, while guiding in Washington on the Grande Ronde River. Gould says he is "really famous" himself as a key player in Skagit fly line and casting technique development. McCune guides for Headhunters and teaches spey casting in Montana and other western states. He and Gould sometimes guide and teach together. Gould is practicing now for the 2020 contest of the World Casting Association, taking place in Sweden. Teams from all over Europe and the U.S. are expected to compete. "My job is to medal in spey," Gould says. e event, she says, is "completely open casting, not a fishing contest." She's confident in her U.S. teammates and her own abilities. "I've been practicing for this competition my whole life," she continues. "I want to win. I'm going to win." However, she respects her competition. "ese girls are really good," she says. And some will have a home-field advantage. In her free time, when not guiding or teaching others, Gould is likely out fishing. "Guiding is my job, competition is my hobby, and fishing is my 'alone' time," she says. She's rarely alone in the summer, though, as guiding can be a seven-day-a-week job during peak season. And even when on her own, chances are you'll find her 9-year-old Golden Lab, Willa, by her side. "Just being outside" is the best part, Gould says. "I love fishing. It takes me to great places." S MT Denise Czuprynski has been writing and editing her full career in marketing and communications. She feels proud and blessed to call Cascade, Montana her home. A good spey reel is a couple of sizes larger in diameter than a standard fly fishing rod. Gould swings the run, actively working the river until she finds the right spot.
