DEA registrations Stay safe and compliant by adhering to DEA guidelines. 26 | Covetrus ph: 855.724.3461 | fx: 888.329.3861 | northamerica.covetrus.com Who needs a DEA registration? Any person who manufacturers, distributes, dispenses, imports, or exports any controlled substance or who plans to engage in these activities must obtain a registration unless exempted. 1 Keep in mind that a separate registration is needed for each principal place of business. For example a separate registration is needed for a satellite location where controlled substances are stored and used to treat patients. The registration requirement is waived for un-registered practitioners working as an employee or an agent of a registered practitioner. In this instance, the unregistered practitioner is able to administer and dispense drugs, but they are unable to write prescriptions. The Veterinary Mobility Act of 2014 would apply if the practitioner transports controlled substance to use in the states they licensed to treat animals on the farm, stable or home with the intention that the remaining drugs will be brought back to the registered location to be securely stored.
