ORGANIZATION tions would be taken "under consideration" and I was content with the response at that time. It was disheart- ening to learn later that my suggestions were never considered. The cable plant design on paper was beautiful, but it did not include the day-to-day use of the cable plant itself. The daily operation's design flaws are still apparent today—a mess of patch cords spilling out of the cable management. After this experience, I felt it was important to educate myself to become more fluent in the physical infra- structure so I could convey input to my peers in their own terminology. I decided to pursue my Registered Communications Distribution Designer ® (RCDD ® ) credential. In 2010 I earned my RCDD, at which time I learned from the studies of different silos covered in the certification. Holding this certification has opened a number of opportunities for me, as my work contin- ues to be translating requirements, no longer limited to network designs. Compared to the past, today seems to hold more opportunities for women. As I reflect on my experienc- es, I see a number of my female peers mastering their skills and becoming fluent in other silos that intercon- nect the ICT world, completing the translation be- tween groups. Using my square-dancing analogy in which males predominantly directed dances in the past, I now notice female CALLERS emerging, not just GUIDING from within the square. Female RCDDs and female network engineers are few and far between, but with time the gap will narrow. There are continuing efforts in schools to get more girls interested in sci- ence, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. Organizations such as Women in BICSI also provide a way to network and gain relationships as we continue to meet each other as peers and provide insight and support. I envision females will continue to find their places in the industry as leaders.
