GLOBAL Page 24 Voice&Data, the refer- ence point and hub for India's telecom and networking industries, sat down with BICSI India District Chair Ninad Desai, RCDD, NTS, OSP, TECH, CT, during the 20 September BICSI India District Conference & Exhibition. The event, which took place at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangalore, placed particular emphasis on the Internet of Things (IoT) and coworking spaces. Here are a few excerpts from the e-newsletter article titled, "BICSI's Skilling Efforts are Overcoming the Paucity of Quality Telecom Infrastructure Installers: Ninad Desai." Voice&Data: What are the key takeaways from this conference in Bangalore? Ninad Desai: "Today's conference is unique in a way that it helps sanitize the learnings of the ICT professionals. I am saying sanitize because we are at the stage where several technologies like Industry 4.0, IoT, AI, ML and 5G are all coming together. In certain use cases, these technologies complement each other in their function, but in most cases, they do not. So, the professionals we see today are confused about the effective uptake and implementation of the technol- ogies. Sanitizing just means that the experts on the dais at the conference would bring out their learnings on the reality aspects to deploying the technology at the ground or field level and also the way forward for these technologies." Voice&Data: How is the Indian ICT environ- ment prepared to handle the influx of 5G and IoT? How can ICT professionals effectively contribute? Ninad Desai: "We need to understand [that] what's happening on the ICT landscape is disruptive. 5G is the foundation for realizing the full potential of IoT. 5G is much more than just fast downloads; it's a unique combination of high-speed connectivity, very low latency which would be the root cause of this technology disruption. Therefore, the speed, reach and quality of 5G services will depend on the quality of ICT cabling and connectivity infrastructure that the service providers would provide, both on inter, as well as on the intra- connectivity fronts. To meet these demands, BICSI, in consulta- tion with professionals from all domains, has designed programs and courses that give a complete course work for a professional to understand the working and the installa- tion of the telecom infrastructure suitable for the next generation demand."
