LONE WALRUS
"This is an old walrus, near death, in the high Arctic off Iqaluit on Baffin Island. When
dying, they move out of the pack and die alone. I was in the water following it, but there
was 100 feet of ice between us, so I had to break it to get close to him. But I had to wait
for the right light to capture the contrast of those tusks.
"I go to the high Arctic every year. I've observed that there is less ice and fewer animals.
The effects of climate change there has been accelerating. We have to leave earlier in the
year to see the typical ice animals."
