O n this late October morning here in Carmel, the tempera- ture outside is 76 degrees and it's not even 10am. We have had the pleasure of enjoying stellar weather this Fall and for my tastes, the sun- nier and warmer, the better. Last evening when our family was out for a dog walk, it was impressive to see how many of us dog walkers were out enjoy- ing the warm evening. Everyone seemed happy and inspired. We had three of our four dogs and one of our four cats on this walk. Though I am more of a dog person than a cat person, I can't help but love them all. Much like people, all these animals have their own personalities they bring to the table. If you have an ability and desire to have a pet, just do it. They offer such joy and comfort. Some research indicates having a pet has health benefits. I totally believe it. It is never too late and there is an animal out there that would love to be a part of your life. They become a part of you and your family. They can offer emotional and physical support and the positives of having them far outweigh the nega- tives. There are many resources around to get you set up with a dog or cat. The only thing is, in most cases we will outlive them so be prepared as the time we have with them is limited. Pamper them and love them, not just when they get old. I have two such animals that are over 18 years old. One is a cat named Tiger. The other, a dog named Diezel. Tiger can't hear and can't see well but he is the sweetest cat on Earth. He recently landed a huge prize gopher in our front yard. That had to be one dumb gopher to be caught by a blind, deaf cat! He is amazing but I know he is fading. Same with Diezel, my 18- year-old Queensland Heeler. His body riddled with tumors and his vision almost gone. His time is short too, but the payoff is I enjoyed his company for many years and will continue to do so as long as he's around. Now that the holiday season is upon us, I hope that our vis- itors and locals can make an effort to support our local busi- nesses. These days it is so easy to shop online but we often for- get the shopping experience is part of the holiday season and can be fun and get you in the spirit. Carmel and the surrounding areas have always attracted artists, writers, photographers, musicians, philanthropists and talented people going back to the early 1900s. The area is rich in history and still seems to attract talented people who were either already here or who discovered this place later in life and find inspiration and make the Monterey Peninsula their home. It is truly a spectacular place that can rival anywhere on Earth. One of Carmel Magazine's writers recently brought a pitch to me about a local photographer who lives in Pacific Grove. His name is Amos Nachoum. The San Francisco Chronicle had featured him. I have been here almost 30 years and had not heard of him. What a pleasant surprise. Check out his story and a few of his spectacular photographs beginning on page 132. We are always looking for content ideas to consider for future issues so email or call me if you have something you believe to be a good fit for what we do. As I have mentioned before, 2020 represents 20 years of Carmel Magazine. Throughout the coming year, we will be adding some new editorial components to the magazine as well as letting you read a little about the people who have been contributing to the magazine for years and what their roles have been in helping us create this magazine. Our success is due to them. We have some great writers, designers and pho- tographers, as well as our sales staff and distributors. In this busi- ness, content drives readers and readers drive advertisers. Without one or the other, we would not have a magazine. I am thankful for both. Lastly, as a long-time suffering San Francisco 49er fan, there is hope. This team seems poised to take the NFC West and hope- fully make it to the Superbowl. I used to go to the games in Kezar Stadium in the early '60s. They were awful then. So bad that you could cut your ticket off of a milk carton. Then many years later, came the Montana/Young era, and that was great, but the drought has been long. It would be awesome if they could be great again. Go Niners! Enjoy the holiday season and shop local when you can. 44 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • H O L I D A Y 2 0 1 9 PUBLISHER'S NOTE S T E V E S N I D E R Now that the holiday season is upon us, I hope that our visitors and locals can make an effort to support our local businesses.
