Holiday Event Spotlights Monterey's Storied Adobes B Y R E N E E B R I N C K S O nce a year, Monterey's most signifi- cant buildings open for festive fandango dancing, family friendly activities, art displays and holiday cheer. The annual Christmas in the Adobes celebration, on December 13 and 14, brings events to nearly two dozen historic downtown structures. "This is a Monterey Peninsula bucket list event," says Lisa Maldonado Bradford of California State Parks. "Guests will find every- thing from flamenco dancing and early California artwork to visits with Santa on Fisherman's Wharf, bagpipes at Stevenson House, and beautiful, traditional Christmas spirit at the Royal Presidio Chapel." Route stops feature live entertainment, refreshments and access to volunteers who dis- cuss the architecture and antiques of each build- ing. Ticketholders can explore local Rumsien Ohlone traditions, bid on original pieces at Monterey Museum of Art's annual Miniatures exhibition, or view items once owned by author Robert Louis Stevenson. The event also marks the one annual oppor- tunity to tour Casa Amesti, Casa Abrego and the Pacheco Adobe, normally open only to private club members. "Monterey has an amazing history, and we enjoy sharing that with guests," Maldonado Bradford says. "After 36 years, this has defi- nitely become a part of some families' holiday experience." Christmas in the Adobes ticket options include multi-day passes and discounts for children, seniors and military members. For details, please visit www.mshpa.org.
