Erin Hanson's "Field of Blooms" was inspired by Monet's large-scale works. The painting is 13 feet by 9 feet and exhibits her Open Impressionism style. 64 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • W I N T E R 2 0 2 0 P ainter Erin Hanson was rock climbing at dawn at Red Rock Canyon outside of Las Vegas when she was inspired to shoot photo- graphs of her wilderness adventures. "I tried to capture the unique compositions and color patterns and light strata at dawn and sunset," she says. "I used those as a starting point to get me going in painting the emotion and the movement when I'm out there." After years of painting rocks, Hanson devel- oped her own style of painting, "a blocky mosa- ic style where each brush stroke is a distinct color without a lot of blending or overlapping strokes" called Open Impressionism. "The underpainting kind of shines between the brush strokes and gives it a really cool stained-glass look," she explains. "It's different than the oil painting I was taught as a little kid where you layer the paint and let it dry a month in between layers. I plan my paintings out before I ever pick up a brush." With a successful gallery in San Diego, Hanson was eager to expand into the Carmel area when the opportunity recently arose. "I've been coming to Carmel to paint the landscape for a long time and I thought having my own gallery here would be a dream. There is already a lot of gorgeous art here, but this style of Contemporary Impressionism is some- thing different." The Erin Hanson Gallery is located on San Carlos between 5th and 6th in Carmel.
