THROUGH THE LENS T E X T A N D P H OTO G R A P H Y B Y A A R O N C H A N G Carmel Brush Stroke Sky 'm truly captivated by the beauty of Carmel Beach. I'm drawn to the white sand, pristine waters and the way the fog dances in and out of my frame. I don't think I will ever tire of capturing the beach's many moods. I took this photograph on one of my very first days in Carmel as a new local. I was wandering down the beach, taking in all the activity, and watch- ing the pure joy of people. It was like so many of the magic evenings here when you see the Carmel community gathering together to watch the sun go down—locals greeting each other, people with dogs, families, surfers, tourists from all over the world…it seems to me that these moments have great importance in people's lives. They are the times of true con- nection with each other, and with nature, as they watch the magnificence of the beauty unfold before them. That's what we cherish—the feeling of being connected to something larger than ourselves. Photographs and songs capture these precious moments of togetherness. As the sun got closer to setting on the horizon, everyone on the beach just stopped and stared as a group, in awe. And then, interestingly, the moment the sun dipped over the horizon, so many people immediately turned their backs and walked away, like the show was over, not realizing they were about to miss the best part. It was well after the sun had set when this shot revealed itself. So much of making a great photograph is having the patience to sit and see what might be revealed to you. And many times, patience is rewarded with photos like this. I was grateful to experience the beauty and splendor of this moment.
