Working Dogs BY MICHAEL CHATFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLI ULDALL 90 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • W I N T E R 2 0 2 0 Stella S teve Bellavance of Central Coast Property Care brings Stella, a year-and-a-half old Norfolk Terrier to work every day. When he's out taking care of his clients' homes, Stella keeps the light burning at the office. "She has a career…right by my desk," Bellavance says. Stella has lot of ambition, a positive attitude and is inquisitive and energetic. She shows great potential for advancement in Bellavance's business. "But frankly, she'd rather be out chasing squirrels," Bellavance laughs. Rosie H Half Pug and half Beagle—a "Puggle"—Rosie is a mere 6 months old but comes to work each morning with Janice and Chris Cleary at the Treadmill. "At this point, she mostly sleeps," Chris Cleary says. "But when she comes down to the sales floor, the staff and customers love her." The Treadmill specializes in gear for runners and hikers, and Rosie is already in training. "I walk our two daughters to school every morning and she always comes along," Cleary says. Perhaps someday she will be the first canine to take top honors in the Big Sur Marathon. "If a dog will not come to you after he has looked you in the face, you ought to go home and examine your conscience." ~ Woodrow Wilson 90
