EVELYN McCORMICK (1869-1948)
The Sherman Rose Adobe (Casa Bonifacio) Monterey, California c. 1930 Oil on canvas, 36" x 48"
Illustrated: "A Bohemian Life-Evelyn McCormick/American Impressionist" by Nelda Hirsh, 2013; page 197.
T
his commanding canvas illustrates one of the
most famous homes in Monterey, built in 1835
on Alvarado Street. It was named, as legend goes, from
the planting of a rose by General Sherman for Senorita
Maria Bonifacio.
Arriving in Monterey in 1879, Robert Louis Stevenson
was often a visitor at Casa Bonifacio while courting his
future wife Fanny Osbourne, residing there at the time.
In 1922 it was moved brick by brick and was re-built
by the renowned artist, Percy Gray, as their residence a
few miles away on Mesa Road, where it stands today in
all its beauty.
