ORGANIZATION
In addition to mentoring the younger generation, we
need to sponsor them and our female peers. And by
that, I mean that we need to speak for them when
they are not around. We need to keep an eye out for
opportunities and make recommendations on behalf
of our female mentees and peers. Here are some things
I have learned through the experts interviewed so far
on our podcast series.
• Women only apply to a job if they feel they meet
100% of the criteria listed, while men will respond
if they meet 60%. Yet 85% of jobs are filled
through networking, NOT job boards.
• Most kids sort out their future careers based
on the exposure they have at the age of 7.
• Progressive companies are moving toward
skills-based hiring, but not fast enough to meet
the demand for those skills.
There are many companies out there that want to
hire women, but when it gets a bit difficult, go back
to the same old, same old. It is our responsibility (in my
humble opinion) to reach out to HR, CEOs and others
we work with and around to sway the thinking to be
more inclusive. I challenge all of you to be a mentor
and a sponsor. Pool resources with female peers when it
makes sense. Pay attention to whom you are referring to
and doing business. I hope 2020 is the year of change
for all of us. Let's BE the change.
