Paul Minx Park Board President Morton Grove Park District mortongroveparks.com register at mortongroveparks.com | 2020 Summer Activity Guide PRESIDENTS LETTER 5 Summer 2020 Greetings everyone, As you bundle inside with family in front of the television watching your favorite show, I am sure the summer is the furthest thing on your mind. It might be several months away and seems too far to get excited about. Not in the offi ces of the park district, staff is excited and busying themselves with planning for the summer. Everyone should know by now that Harrer Pool will not open this summer. For 57 years Harrer Pool served this community well. It is unfortunate we could not squeeze one more year, but the right decision was made. With its closure, staff has done an excellent job of adjusting the schedule at Oriole to accommodate both pools' activities. You can imagine this was quite a diffi cult task. We ask for everyone's understanding and patience during this time with only one pool. Last fall the park district applied for an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources as part of the Austin Park redevelopment plans. The bulk of the OSLAD money is used to provide grants to park districts, forest preserves and city parks throughout Illinois to acquire open space and to develop and improve park facilities. We are excited to announce the Morton Grove Park District received a matching grant of $223,700 for the project. Collectively, these funds will go a long way in improving Austin Park. The Austin Park Redevelopment project will begin in early September. Normally, we like to start construction projects in the spring but since the award of the grant happened in the winter and all construction documents and bidding has yet to be done, starting in the spring is not possible. This way, those of us who use the park, can use it during the summer months. To fi nd the progress on the project or to learn more about it, visit our website. A big change this summer is the change to our annual event, Sizzle into Summer. For the past several years the event has struggled to catch on. We have decided to make a change. On Tuesday, June 16 we will be off ering a Kick-off to Summer Party that will feature a live band, infl atables, children's activities, food sales, beer garden and kids' entertainer and contests. For more information see page 9. I encourage you to stay informed on your park district. Visit our website or attend one of our board meetings. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of each month. If you want to send the board an email, you can do so at board@mgparks.com. We hope to see you this summer. Paul Minx Board President
