Jane became a homeopathic doctor and uses her knowledge mainly through speaking engagements. At a recent Montana Organic Association Conference, she shared the results of studies done by Stephanie Seneff and her MIT team indicating that glyphosate, which is an ingredient in the herbicide, Roundup, remains in the soil and on plants we eat. Consequently, it does damage to our bodies leading to a sundry of chronic and acute illnesses, such as thyroid disease; hormone imbalances; heart, kidney, and liver failure; and various cancers. Jane also pointed out that enriching crops with artificial fertilizers has depleted the soil. Department of Agriculture studies show that as artificial fertilizers became more intensely used from 1950-1999, a "decline" in nutrients in 43 different vegetables was observed. Deficiencies have also shown up in milk, eggs, and apples. It has become apparent that instead of using artificial fertilizers, making soil healthy through natural processes leads to higher levels of nutrients in commodities. Jane said that it is time to seriously look at what agriculture can do for consumers to have healthy food. e Smiths know that they are producing beef that is beer for their customers' health and tastes beer too. e beef is sold throughout the year to Whole Foods Inc., Montana Harvest Store in Billings, and directly to customers. "It has been good to get the 'hectic' out of our lives, and we love being part of the organic movement with our beef," said Jane. "We are certain that with the changes being made, agriculture has a bright future." See slides om Jane's presentation at the Montana Organic Association Conference at idrjane.com/body.html.
