As recent events have shown, the world is increasingly dependent on reliable wireless communications. Part of the solution in meeting clients' demands for reliable coverage is the use of a distributed antenna system (DAS) and selecting the right system for their needs. Whether the system's signal is received passively, through a base station, small cell or digitally, ANSI/BICSI 006-2020, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) Design and Implementation Best Practices can help any designer meet their clients' needs. BICSI 006 provides designers and installers the necessary informa- tion on the types, sources and components required by a DAS in a variety of environments and locations to support past and current applications, including 5G and FirstNet. The standard addresses a range of topics, which include safety regulations, design consider- ations, implementation, management and operations, and site and functional support issues, to name a few. In addition, numerous appendices are incorporated covering wireless services and signals, legal aspects of wireless design, terminating and testing coaxial transmission lines, hazardous environments and locations, and related documents. Revisions to ANSI/BICSI 006-2020 The DAS standard, first introduced in May 2015, received a thorough revision in November 2019. Although the scope remains the same—to provide industry and service providers with neutral requirements and best practices for the design and installation of a DAS—the new 2020 Enabling a Connected World ANSI/BICSI 006-2020, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) Design and Implementation Best Practices release has been restructured and greatly expanded to reflect today's regulatory and safety codes, standards and technologies. Some revisions include: • Expansion of emergency communication material • Expansion of signal source information • Expansion of system and connector installation practices • Addition of 5G cellular and multiple carrier support • Addition of passive optical networks (PONs) Global Standards Application Subject matter experts (SMEs) working on BICSI 006 took careful consideration to consult standards representatives from around the world, covering a range of ICT verticals. This resulted in a globally applicable standard supportive of a universal approach to DAS design and implementation. Enabling a Connected World—And Getting it Right! If you play a role in designing and installing distributed antenna systems, build on your reputation as someone who ensures product functionality and compatibility, facilitates interoperability and supports consumer safety. That will certainly keep your clients coming back. Learn more about ANSI/BICSI 006-2020 and place your order at bicsi.org/006. STANDARDS Page 23
