An update on recent activities including the establishment of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science and initial plans for DDL2020, which will be replaced by The Christmas Lectures. The Aerosol Society and Drug Delivery to the Lungs 2020 Dr. Michelle Dawson, DDL Committee Professor Ben Murray, The Aerosol Society Committee an extraordinary opportunity to engage with world-renowned sci- entists from across the aerosol and respiratory delivery field, promote their own work and gain experi- ence attending a large and presti- gious conference. Students wishing to attend DDL2020 must register online to confirm their place. Following a successful launch in 2019, the conference will also host the New Researcher Network, the aims of which are to develop a broad community of early career scientists and help facilitate discus- sions surrounding research ideas/ challenges as well as exchanges, joint project and personal and professional development. New and early career researchers from both academia and industry, as well as PhD students, are encour- aged to participate in the group, which saw 110 registrants in 2019 at the networking lunch and has expanded to include a networking LinkedIn group. Drug Delivery to the Lungs will continue to host the Pat Burnell Young Investigator Competition, named in honor of one of the founders of the Aerosol Society, created in the mid-1980s as a UK forum for matters encompassing the whole of aerosol science. Final- ists for this prestigious award will be given the opportunity to pres- ent on the podium and be judged on both their oral lectures and sci- entific poster submissions. e application deadline for this award is July 17, 2020. Shortly before this article went to press, the organizers of the DDL2020 Conference regretfully announced their difficult deci- sion to cancel the live event due to COVID-19. However, they will be presenting "e Christmas Lec- tures" instead. Following the resounding success of its 30th anniversary in 2019, the Drug Delivery to the Lungs Conference, to be held Decem- ber 9-11 2020, enters its fourth decade looking towards the future. Following positive feedback from delegates, the conference will again be held at the Edinburgh International Conference Cen- tre (EICC) in Scotland. e loca- tion is convenient and well served by numerous transportation links and the city-center location offers multiple accommodations for a range of budgets. e conference is planning to com- mence on Wednesday, December 9 with registration available from mid-morning onward, followed by a networking lunch before the opening presentations. Early regis- tration will be offered on Tuesday, December 8 for delegates who would like to access and/or net- working prior to the official con- ference start. Drug Delivery to the Lungs truly is a global conference. Last year saw 875 delegates from 35 coun- tries attend the three-day meet- ing, demonstrating year-on-year growth. With rich scientific con- tent, including presentations from 40 speakers and 82 posters, com- bined with 113 exhibitors, DDL has become recognized as a lead- ing conference dedicated to pul- monary and nasal drug delivery. Drug Delivery to the Lungs aims to provide a balance of coverage from across key areas of aerosol development and delivery (e.g., CMC, clinical and device develop- ment) to appeal to both academia and industry.
