Established in 1846, Fort Benton is the oldest selement in Montana, hence its
nickname, "e Birthplace of Montana". Once known as the "World's Innermost
Port," Fort Benton was also the furthest point of navigable water on the Missouri
River -- making it one of the most important ports on the Missouri-Mississippi
river system.
ummer travel may look a bit different for many Montanans this year. But that
doesn't mean new adventures have to wait for another year. A couple of miles off
Highway 87 between Great Falls and Havre, lies a hidden gem where the West is well
preserved and celebrated. Fort Benton is a small town with a big history is the perfect
place to get away from crowds this summer, without sacrificing fun and adventure.

A day float, roughly 14 river miles upstream from Fort Benton, offers the perfect opportunity to see millions of years of sediment on the river
bluffs, everything from glacial deposits to volcanic ash, cottonwood trees, wildlife and a slow meandering portion of the Missouri after it has
tumbled over five waterfalls upstream near Great Falls.
