SiG MT 26 DECADENT DESIGN TEXT BY HEATHER BODE PHOTOGRAPHY BY SKYE HATTEN TAKING TO THE AIR Twenty-seven miles downstream from Townsend, the construction of Canyon Ferry Dam began under a shroud of controversy in 1949. With a four-fold purpose of power generation, irrigation, flood control, and recreation, the dam took a full five years to complete. To encourage recreational use of this newly formed man-made reservoir known as Canyon Ferry Lake, the government offered up land leases for 265 cabin sites. "Since my grandpa worked on the construction of the dam, they were afforded the first opportunity and he chose this site," says Vicki Turner.
