C atherine's mother, Nellie Comstock, was the Patron who gave the Carmel Art Association its initial building fund in 1927. Her brothers, Hugh and Hurd Comstock, were early Carmel developers. Hugh is best remembered for designing and building the many "Hansel and Gretel" storybook homes which to this day continue to define the quaint charm of Carmel-by- the-Sea. Catherine became an instructor at the Carmel Arts and Crafts Summer School in 1909, continuing her lifelong dedication to the arts, both locally and beyond. She mar- ried artist George Seideneck in 1921, be- coming permanent residents of the Carmel area. Though also making extended painting trips to Europe, the couple remained es- teemed members in all aspects of the Carmel/Monterey arts community. George Joseph Seideneck (1885-1972) Carmel Coast with Eucalyptus H is natural talent for art gained early recognition as a portrait painter. Soon after, his interest turned to landscape painting of European subject as well as local scenes. In 1927 George and Catherine became founding members of the CAA, George serving on the Board and later on as its President. Over the years his artistic interest involved photography. In the mid-1930s he helped organize and became an active member of the Carmel Camera Club whose members included such luminaries as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. In 1938 the Guild of Carmel Craftsmen was formed, and George was appointed 'temporary chairman.' A major comprehensive exhibition and sale of paintings by Catherine and George Seideneck can be seen at the Carmel gallery.
