MOVERS AND SHAKERS Almond Board of California 2 MOVERS AND SHAKERS Almond Board of California 2 Richard Mattes, Ph.D. The United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service recently selected Richard Mattes, Ph.D., as the 2020 W.O. Atwater Memorial Lecturer. Dr. Mattes, a long-time Almond Board-funded nutrition researcher, is a professor of nutrition science at Purdue University, a member of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, and the current President of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN). He will be honored next year at ASN's Nutrition 2021 conference in Boston, Massachusetts. "Dr. Mattes, one of America's leading nutrition researchers, has conducted several groundbreaking studies investigating the role of almonds in managing appetite and satiety, and consequently in managing the risk of chronic diseases. The results of his 2013 publication, for instance, helped dispel the notion that nut snacking leads to weight gain. This award is well deserved," said Swati Kalgaonkar, Ph.D., ABC's associate director of Nutrition Research. Jake Wenger Modesto almond and walnut grower Jake Wenger was recently elected as president of the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau, replacing former president and almond grower Darrell Cordova. In his role, Wenger will work with local and state leaders to help protect family farms and ranches from over-regulation and issues impacting Stanislaus County agriculture. "I am excited for the opportunity to serve the members of Stanislaus County Farm Bureau as president for the next two years. Over my term, I will work to help secure local water rights, fight to preserve our prime farmland, and oppose burdensome regulation like the 'split-roll' tax measure that will be on the ballot this November. I also hope to grow our membership and educate our local community on how Farm Bureau works hard every day for the good of our food!" said Wenger. Both Wenger and Cordova are graduates of the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation. Woo Kyun Kim, Ph.D. This June, Woo Kyun Kim, Ph.D., received the Poultry Nutrition Research Award from the American Feed Industry Association, who recognized him for his work in animal gut and bone health, nutrient utilization and immunity. Dr. Kim, an associate professor and poultry nutritionist in the University of Georgia's Department of Poultry Science, is the principal investigator in an ABC-funded study that is examining the feasibility of using almond hulls as a poultry feed ingredient. The results from his team's study indicate that clean hulls, which are rich in fibers and phytochemicals, can provide a portion of the base meal for broilers and layers. "With the positive findings and the expected potential benefits from the feeding trials, we're excited by the prospect that ground almond hulls could become a hot ingredient for poultry feed in the near future," said Guangwei Huang, associate director of Food Research and Technology at the Almond Board.
