So the place you go next will have a big impact on your life." Meanwhile in Urbana-Champaign, 25 students matched, and in Rockford, close to 50 students matched in 15 different specialties. Students in Rockford took the podium one by one to announce where they were headed and placed themselves on a map of the U.S., to boisterous cheers from their classmates. (See footage at http://new. livestream.com/accounts/3169958/matchday2013.) "It's the culminating event of their whole [medical school] career," said Kashima in Chicago. "It's wonderful for us to get their family and friends together." And given that the students had been in clinical rotations for much of the last couple of years, she said, "This is almost like a celebratory reunion. A lot of them hadn't seen each other for quite some time." Angel Desai, who matched in internal medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, said she liked knowing that everyone in the Aon Center room was feeling the same roller coaster of emotions. "You think about this moment when you enter medical school," she said. "Now that it's here, it's kind of surreal." Chad Barnes, who matched in general surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, said he was excited to find out where he would be spending the next several years. "It's been a lifelong goal, since age 13," he said. "I'm just excited because I'm a step closer." Added his mother, Renay, "He's been a doctor, in his mind, for years. … He's a very compassionate person. We're thankful he's been able to do what he wanted to do. He's worked really hard." Twins Ali and Ammar Al-Saraf, natives of Baghdad whose parents now live (and practice medicine) in Rockford, will be staying in Illinois—Ali will do his first year at Loyola and then continue in diagnostic radiology at University of Chicago, while Ammar will begin in diagnostic radiology at Rush and then continue at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Ill. "It's a blessing that both my brother and I were at U. of I.," Ammar Al-Saraf said. "We get along with each other. We push each other." Added Ali Al-Saraf, "It's been a great educational experience. ... It's an amazing feeling. This is an honor to be here. I'm happy for my family and friends." "They've come a long way," Mona Al-Saraf said of their sons. "This is America. You get yourself on the right track, and you make it." She added that "there never seemed to be any question" about her sons' career choice. "We never pressured them. They just followed it naturally." Teresa Marganski, a college alumna and family practitioner at the Carle Physician Group in Danville, Ill., is happy that her son, Jake, will be doing his residency in emergency medicine nearby at Washington University in St. Louis. "It's an unbelievable feeling of pride and accomplishment for him," she said. "The butterflies in my stomach have settled down." Another proud mom, Susan Hughes, said she felt "total uncompromising joy. I could not be happier. … We're so glad Dempsey has gotten to this point, she and her classmates, who have worked so hard." A professor in the department of community health sciences at UIC's School of Public Health, Hughes added, "They deserve what's coming to them. They're a wonderful class. It's been a great thing to see."
